Marcelin Albert : an incredible destiny ! In 1903, the wine was bought 22 francs per hectolitre. Three years later, its price was only 5 francs. The crisis only benefits to fraudsters who made wine with sugar and chemicals. Winegrowers of the South of France are very near to be ruined. Marcelin Albert was a Café owner in Argeliers. He climbed at the top of a tree and suggested the citizens to resist and to revolt. 11 March 1907: « 87 » of them walked with Marcelin Albert from Argeliers to Narbonne. The mayor Mr Ferroul did not take them seriously. 5 May 1907: The "prophet" is back to Narbonne with 100,000 winegrowers. Next Sunday there were 120,000 people in Beziers. 19 May 1907: 170,000 people walked in Perpignan, then in Carcassonne, in Nîmes and they were 600,000 with Marcelin Albert in Montpellier. 9 June 1907: Clemenceau - who was the chief of the government in Paris- could no longer dodge.
